WINTER 2024-25

DECEMBER 1 - february 23

The Gospel of Matthew

Teacher Dan Petersen. This class is the beginning of a detailed study of the Gospel of Matthew. We will travel back in time to the first century to try to read the gospel through the eyes of the first generation of followers of Jesus. The goal will be "to obey all that Jesus commanded" (Matt. 28:20).

Reading the Bible as Worship

Teacher Adam Roseboom. We will examine Bible study methods (hermeneutics) that focus our hearts on the glory of Christ. We will work through 2 Corinthians 1-7 as we consider how hearing and reading God's Word grows our love for Jesus.

The Reformation

Teacher Kurt Butterfield. We will consider: What were the compelling issues that moved the church toward reformation? Who were the early leaders in the movement and how did it end up with a complete break from the Catholic Church based in Rome? How did we end up with various denominations with variations on doctrine? This class will be similar in format to earlier classes on church history, but now we will focus on and dive deeper into the reformation and not cover the entire 2000 years of church history. Our focus will be historical and not theological - however, we will discuss how theological issues were debated and resolved throughout the period we now call The Reformation.

Questioning Christianity

Video Series by Tim Keller. This an opportunity to respectfully dialogue together about the objections and doubts from friends of different world-views. These are lecture style talks followed by a question-and-answer time. The topics covered are:

How can you believe in something you can’t prove?
Does life have meaning beyond what I make of it?
Can life be meaningful in the face of suffering?
How can I be happy? Does God care about my happiness?
Am I only as good as my latest achievement?
Can there be moral absolutes? Aren’t right and wrong just common sense?
What can humans do in the face of all the injustice in the world?
Can hope exist in the face of death and all the evil in the world?

The Pursuit of God

Facilitator Michael Hutchins. This class is based on the book "The Pursuit of God" by A.W. Tozer.  From Tozer’s Preface: “This book is a modest attempt to aid God’s hungry children so to find Him. Nothing here is new except in the sense that it is a discovery which my own heart has made of spiritual realities most delightful and wonderful to me (A.W. Tozer).” Each week we will review key points from a chapter and utilize thought provoking questions from the study guide in the 2020 edition of the book. Copies of this book will be made available to those attending the class.
